Overview
Details

One or more HBSW Indigenous social work students from Laurentian University are available to be your virtual interns, in a project- or virtual service-based experience. Students will engage in one or more projects or services of your choosing over the internship period, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools.

Students are available for up to 300 hours of placement from September to April 22, 2022.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, student placements will only occur virtually.

These project or service offerings are part of the field education experience, an agency-based course in which students apply, in supervised practice, the theoretical concepts, principles, values, and ethics taught in the classroom. In addition to the supervised learning of skills with individuals, families, and groups, students will be socialized to the identity of a professional social worker and the many roles that social workers occupy in agencies and the community.

Deliverables

Deliverables will vary depending on the scope of the project. The student should complete up to 300 hours with your organization by April 22, 2022.

Project Examples

Students can complete a substantial project or provide service for your organization over the placement period.

Projects or service examples that students can complete may include, but are not limited to:

  • Delivery of remote services (counselling, psycho-education, group sessions), with supervision
  • Projects that respond directly to issues of social isolation, service interruption, etc. for your agency
  • Projects that assist an agency with policy, program development, grant writing, etc.
Additional company criteria

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Placements are for credit and therefore unpaid.

Connecting with the field education coordinator to initiate the placement and confirm the scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Providing a dedicated contact who will act as the student's primary supervisor over the duration of the virtual placement. A secondary contact should be provided as a backup. Students will interact virtually with their primary contact on a daily basis, or as needed.

Providing training and supervision when engaging in direct practice with clients. If the student is providing social services to the public, an agency supervisor must have a BSW or MSW, or approved equivalent.
